Andrew Cuomo Now Straight-up Lying About COVID-19 Patients in NY Nursing Homes

“it just never happened in New York where we needed to say to a nursing home, ‘we need you to take this person even though they’re COVID-positive. It never happened”

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has decided to rewrite history. The disastrous policy of putting Coronavirus patients into New York nursing homes cost thousands of lives, but Cuomo is now saying that didn’t happen.

The governor of New York is straight-up lying to the faces of the American people.

New York’s Cuomo faces criticism of latest nursing home, coronavirus comments

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office is pushing back against the mounting criticism it received for claims the governor made about forcing nursing homes to accept patients who tested positive for COVID-19.

Finger Lakes News Radio asked Cuomo on Wednesday what he would tell families who blamed his March 25th health directive, which required nursing homes to accept patients.

Cuomo, a Democrat, said that nursing homes were never forced to accept COVID-19 patients from overloaded hospitals because the state had “flattened the curve so effectively, we always had available hospital beds. So, we never scrambled for beds, and we never needed nursing home beds because we always had hospital beds.

He added: “So, it just never happened in New York where we needed to say to a nursing home, ‘we need you to take this person even though they’re COVID-positive. It never happened.”

The New York governor argued that nursing homes were required not to discriminate against COVID-19 patients but could refuse them if they couldn’t provide care while effectively caring for others in their facility.

Even CNN couldn’t cover for Cuomo on this, and called him out.

Fact check: Gov. Cuomo falsely claims New York nursing homes never took in Covid-positive patients

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo argued that nursing homes “never needed” to accept Covid-positive patients from hospitals in the state.

During a press call Wednesday, Finger Lakes News Radio asked Cuomo about his administration’s advisory in late March requiring that nursing homes accept the readmission of patients from hospitals, even if they were positive for Covid-19.

Cuomo argued that the advisory was a precaution if hospitals became overwhelmed — calling it an “anticipatory rule” — which he said didn’t happen.

“We never needed nursing home beds because we always had hospital beds,” Cuomo told Finger Lakes News. “So it just never happened in New York where we needed to say to a nursing home, ‘We need you to take this person even though they’re Covid-positive.’ It never happened.”…

On March 25, the state’s Health Department issued an advisory requiring nursing homes to accept “the expedited receipt of residents returning from hospitals” if the patients were deemed medically stable.

“No resident shall be denied re-admission or admission to the [nursing home] solely based on a confirmed or suspected diagnosis of COVID-19,” the advisory stated. “[Nursing homes] are prohibited from requiring a hospitalized resident who is determined medically stable to be tested for COVID-19 prior to admission or readmission.”

Ask yourself why Cuomo thought he could get away with saying this.

The answer should be fairly obvious.

Shortly after the NY health department issued their order saying that nursing homes were not
free to reject COVID patients, the director of the Cobble Hill nursing home told what happened in his facility.

The nursing homes were not allowed time to arrange isolation units; they had to accept the patients immediately. The director asked whether it would be possible to put these patients on the hospital ship, which was equipped to care for them. This suggestion was rejected.

The director then asked for the necessary protective equipment. None was sent, but they did send instructions on how to clean and sterilize the equipment the nursing home didn’t have. They also sent body bags.

The upshot was that at least fifty people in this nursing home died.
