North Korea Launches Missile Towards Sea of Japan

North Korea Launches Missile Towards Sea of Japan

South Korea will hold special security meeting on Saturday.

The Pentagon has confirmed that North Korea launched a ballistic missile at 11:41PM local time towards the Sea of Japan. The Wall Street Journal reported:

The unusual late-evening launch, which South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said took place at 11:41 p.m. Seoul time, was launched from Mupyong-ri in North Korea’s Chagang Province, in the country’s mountainous interior, and landed in the waters off the east coast of the Korean Peninsula.

The Joint Chiefs didn’t offer any details on the type of missile fired, but the launch was confirmed by the Pentagon, which said that only it was assessing the launch.

The missile firing took place a day after the 64th anniversary of the end of the Korean War, a day when several missile experts and North Korea watchers were closing watching for signs of a North Korean missile launch. But the timing of the launch may have been affected by rain and cloudy weather that covered much of the country Thursday and Friday.

Moon Jae-in, South Korea’s president, called an emergency meeting of the country’s National Security Council for Saturday morning in Seoul, according to a spokesman for the South Korean Joint Chiefs.
