Oregon State Requiring Freshmen to Study “Social Justice”

“To contribute to an inclusive university community.”

Oregon State University will force incoming Freshmen to complete an online program in social justice. If progressive ideas are so attractive and important, why must they always be required?

    The College Fix reports:

Oregon State to force ‘social justice’ training on freshmen

Oregon State University is developing an online course centered on “social justice” that new students will soon be required to take.

The course will debut as a pilot program during the fall term, which starts in late September, and the full roll-out will happen toward the beginning of winter term, which starts in January, a university official told The College Fix via email.

The new program “is intended to provide all students entering Oregon State University an orientation to concepts of diversity, inclusion, and social justice and help empower all OSU students to contribute to an inclusive university community,” campus documents state.

“Social justice” is largely a progressive phrase mainly used to tout left-leaning agendas such as environmentalism, socialism, feminism and gay rights.

Isn’t this a bit insulting to Millennials? From the time they could walk they’ve had concepts like diversity and gender equity spoon fed to them. Now, as young adults entering college, they’re told that they still don’t fully understand these ideas?

    The College Fix goes on:

Oregon State’s course, as proposed, would consist of five online modules that include a primer on “social justice efforts in Oregon and at OSU,” instruction on how campus diversity advocates define “an inclusive and equitable university community,” details on how students can “incorporate the pursuit of social justice within their university experiences,” and information on how to “explore opportunities for engagement in ongoing social justice learning.”

The Rebel has more, including a claim that this program won’t infringe upon free speech:

The school’s Chief Diversity Officer—the presence of such a thing problematic enough—told the College Fix that the course is necessary to inform students of “systemic and local inequities” and to “correct injustice.”

She said that free speech will not be compromised.

“The goal of our bias incident response isn’t to stop or prevent anyone from exercising their right to engage in free speech within social media channels or elsewhere,” she said. “It’s not about avoiding hard conversations or difficult ideas, but promoting and creating a safe and inclusive community where everyone has the ability to fully participate in these conversations.”

The Rebel also provides this video report which delves a little deeper into the subject:

Again, I can’t understand why Millennials wouldn’t find this insulting. They are already more sensitive, some would say even hypersensitive, to these issues than any generation before them.

Why must they be forced to undergo such training in college?

If I had a child headed for a serious major, I would encourage them to learn the language of a country with a really GOOD school in the chose field, and then go there. In another five years or so, there is not likely to be any serious colleges left in this country.

If enough students banded together and told the administrators that they are there to take a course of study and not to be indoctrinated in social justice, this stuff would stop.

Being compelled to take a course that tells me how awful I am for being white and male is something I would not take lightly, given both the per-unit cost of college classes, and my not wanting to pay for some nonsense course of which the only purpose is to give some graduate in some “studies” major a job.

I’m sure teaching 70% of the incoming class they’re all kinds of racist POS will lead to inclusiveness like there’s no tomorrow.

    And there won’t be.

Any bets they will be taught that at one time citizens of the Black persuasion were, by state law, not allowed to live in Oregon? Or that interracial marriage was prohibited?

I can see a drop in tuition money in the near future. Call me crazy.
