White Smoke (Update — Pope Francis f/k/a Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aires)

    I guess there’s a new Pope.

Not being Catholic, I’ll leave it to readers to assess after the identity is known.

I’m not Catholic, but this morning, as I tried to fix my meal while fighting a nasal cold, the words Ecce Homo just came into my mind…

That was said by Pontious Pilate when he showed Jesus before the crowd to decide whether to crucify Him or not. “Behold the man!” I didn’t understand why this happened to me.

Now, it makes sense to say, Ecce Homo. The new Pope will be shown to the entire world – not just St. Peter’s Square, but though all media. While Catholics will most likely receive him with joy, the entire secular world can’t wait to get their fangs into him and… well… crucify him.

That is probably the reason why the new Pope goes through the “Room of Tears”…

“Obama tells Hse R’s there was white smoke and someone asked if that meant the WH was open to tours again.”

    Now that is funny.

    Francis I.

Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Archbishop of Buenos Aires, a Jesuit, a scholar who rides the bus, a child of Italians who emigrated to Argentina…

He must have been in his forties when Argentina’s “Dirty War” happened…

They are going to call him an American. Also, he took the name of my most favorite saint, St. Francis of Assisi.

      A little background on him.

Pope Francis is the first ever from the Americas, an austere Jesuit intellectual who modernized Argentina’s conservative Catholic church.

Known until Wednesday as Jorge Bergoglio, the 76-year-old is known as a humble man who denied himself the luxuries that previous Buenos Aires cardinals enjoyed. He came close to becoming pope last time, reportedly gaining the second-highest vote total in several rounds of voting before he bowed out of the running in the conclave that elected Pope Benedict XVI.

My guess is that he chose the name in honor of St. Francis Xavier, who was one of the founders of the Jesuits.

I urge all LI readers, whether they are Catholic or not (I am Lutheran), to pray for the new Pope.
