Politico tries to expunge media bias by playing victim of Obama manipulation

Two of the biggies at Politico have a lead article today, Obama, the puppet master (emphasis mine):

President Barack Obama is a master at limiting, shaping and manipulating  media coverage of himself and his White House.

Not for the reason that conservatives suspect: namely, that a liberal press  willingly and eagerly allows itself to get manipulated. Instead, the mastery  mostly flows from a White House that has taken old tricks for shaping coverage  (staged leaks, friendly interviews) and put them on steroids using new ones  (social media, content creation, precision targeting). And it’s an equal  opportunity strategy: Media across the ideological spectrum are left scrambling  for access.

    I’m calling nonsense to this.

It certainly is true that Obama is good at manipulating the media, but I’m taking Obama’s side on this one.  The media has proven itself willing subjects, with tingles and oohs and ahhs running wild since before Obama was elected the first time.

Obama didn’t force the media to run wild for days against Romney over Benghazi while covering up the cover up.  Obama didn’t force the media to collude at Romney’s Benghazi press conference to make sure an appropriate gotcha question was asked.  Obama didn’t force the media to proclaim Paul Ryan a liar, or to perpetuate the falsehood that Republicans are racist.  Obama didn’t force Politico to turn practically its entire home page over to going after Herman Cain.

Don’t blame Obama for your own failings.

Look in the mirror and ask why you are such a bunch of hypocritical sycophants who abandoned all pretense of journalistic integrity in order to get Obama elected twice.

Yes, you are puppets.  At least you got that right.

[…] The White House has merely exploited the unabashed fandom of the journalistic elite, which is so overwhelmingly liberal that they were only too happy for the opportunity to publish daily valentines to their presidential heartthrob. Predictably, this posture of eager sycophancy has not earned reporters the respect of those they flatter, and so White House correspondents — journalists at the very peak of professional prestige — are shocked to find themselves treated like rent-boys by the administration’s P.R. machinery. William Jacobson at Legal Insurrection is unsympathetic: […]
