Progressive Harvard Law Prof: Obama “must be defeated”

The most shocking thing to me about this video is not that Harvard Law Professor Robert Mangabeira Unger looks so old.

When I was in law school he was a baby-faced rising star on the faculty (his photo from that time period still is on his faculty bio).  It always amazes me when others grow old while I have stayed pretty much the, um, same.

Back then, the word among the students was that no one could figure out what he was saying.  (See Instapundit for more about Unger.)

No, the most shocking thing is that he makes a point which even I can understand, via HuffPo (h/t HotAir):

“President Obama must be defeated in the coming election,” Roberto Unger, a longtime professor at Harvard Law School who taught Obama, said in a video posted on May 22. “He has failed to advance the progressive cause in the United States.”

Unger said that Obama must lose the election in order for “the voice of democratic prophecy to speak once again in American life.”

He acknowledged that if a Republican wins the presidency, “there will be a cost … in judicial and administrative appointments.” But he said that “the risk of military adventurism” would be no worse under a Republican than under Obama, and that “the Democratic Party proposes no new direction.”

Jump ahead to 6:00 for the really good stuff.

    • “His policy is financial confidence and food stamps.”
    • “He has spent trillions of dollars to rescue the moneyed interests and left workers and homeowners to their own devices.”
    • “He has delivered the politics of democracy to the rule of money.”
    • “He has disguised his surrender with an empty appeal to tax justice.”
    • “He has reduced justice to charity.”
    • “He has subordinated the broadening of economic and educational opportunity to the important but secondary issue of access to health care in the mistaken belief that he would be spared a fight.”
    • “He has evoked a politics of handholding, but no one changes the world without a struggle.”

He’s right, of course. Why any true liberal/progressive puts faith in Obama always has been beyond me.

Obama is a walking disaster for progressives, the embodiment of a cult of racial and class rhetoric over progress, which puts Obama at the center of the universe.

Two points: Why is he stationed on the “right” side of the video frame and why are comments “disabled”? Oh…wait…I know the answer to the second point. He’s a Harvard professor and is therefore not “answerable” to the peons he professes to protect.

[…] Professor Jacobson is a former student of Unger and says back then the word among his students was that no one could figure out what he was saying. […]

Had the Nazis maintained control of Germany and/or parts or all of Europe, their fascist ways would have run out of real and perceived enemies and eventually begun munching on its own tail; the Nazi machine would have eaten itself.

In similar fashion, modern progressives are unable to rule once they assume power because they are comfortable only with the dissenter role, revlutionaries, perpetual underdogs. The political ‘skills’ of the Obama team in 2007-09 quickly devolved into buffoonish ineptitude once in power, and even now their reelection campaign – run from the highest seat of power and not from the underdog or usurpers’ position – is displaying even greater ineptitude.

And true to the progressive (lack of) style, having vanquished the evil Bushites in 2008, and desperately casting about for enemies to demonize, they now begin to eat themselves. This professor is no island in the academecian seas, and the Obama surrogates who cannot seem to stop undermining their own leader are not outliers.

As (or if) an Obama loss this November becomes more apparent, I expect to see his here-to-fore adoring MSM begin to abandon him like lice from a burning scalp, the better to salvage something out of the nightmare that is the Obama presidency, if only the shreds of their tattered credibility. In fact, it has already begun, as evidenced by some of the media liberal trashing of Obama’s supposed economics reset speech in Ohio last week. The trashing of Obama by mainstream media libs, unheard of till the past few months, is increasing, while at the same time the standard counter-trashing of liberal critics of Obama is lessening.

Given that the Obama administration has proved itself no respecter of law, truth, honesty, or of anything else standing between it and its power-sponging goals, I have great fear over what they might do out of political desperation and out of desperation to protect the Obama ‘legacy’, especially in that they hold no clear objective view of what anything is in reality. All is unicorns and demagogic spells, and Obama acts as would a President Merlin.
